Versailles Lady Tigers walk-off winners over Covington

VERSAILLES – The Versailles Lady Tigers got a walk-off win over the Covington Lady BUCCS 10-9 in non-conference softball action on the Tigers’ home field to win their fifth straight home game and push its season record to 11-4.

“It feels great coming from the CCC in previous years,” said Versailles coach Tatyana Cotrell, a Bradford High School and Capital University softball alum. “I know Covington is a great team. I am glad that my girls came out and won today.”

The Lady BUCCS opened the night with an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first with Versailles plating a run in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 score.

The Lady Tigers added a run in the bottom of the second and 2 runs in the bottom half of the third to lead 4-2 with 3 innings in the book.

After a scoreless fourth, Covington answered with a 3-run fifth to lead 5-4 only to have the Lady Tigers send 2 runners home in the bottom of the inning retaking the lead 6-5.

Covington plated a single run in the top of the sixth to get even at 6-6 with Versailles scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 9-6 with one inning to go.

“They never slowed down when they put in the slower pitcher,” said Coach Cotrell.

The Lady BUCCS battled back to knot the score at 9-9 scoring 3 runs in the top of the seventh bringing the Lady Tigers to the plate setting up Cassie Leach’s slide home with the walk-off winning run.

The Lady BUCCS came into the night riding a 3-game road win streak and with the loss left town with a respectable 11-5 season mark.

Hiestand went the distance on the mound for Versailles allowing 8 earned runs on 15 hits, no walks while striking out 3 Lady BUCCS.
