GREENVILLE – The Greenville Municipal Concert Band returns to the Marling Band Shell in the Greenville City Park on Sunday, August 3. Concert time will be 7:00 pm.
This “Sounds of Ohio” concert will feature band compositions by Ohio composers and music with Ohio connections. There is plenty of seating available on park benches, or listeners may bring their own lawn chairs. There is no admission charge for the concert. The band will be under the direction of its associate director, Doug Albright.
The following titles, all with Ohio connections, will be on the program: “Men of Ohio March,” “Around the World in 80 Measures,” “Torch of Liberty March,” “Rocky Mountain Way, and “I Got You (I Feel Good).” Another major work on the program is “The Light Eternal,” by Ohio composer James Swearingen. “The Light Eternal” is a musical tribute to “The Legend of the Four Chaplains.” The four chaplains of the title were army chaplains aboard the troop ship S.S. Dorchester when it was torpedoed and sunk in the North Atlantic in World War Two, and their heroism and selflessness during the sinking inspired Mr. Sweringen to write this music.
Chelsea Whirledge will be the featured vocal soloist with the band for this concert. Mrs. Whirledge will be singing a medley of songs from the Broadway Musical Chicago, as well as “Put On A Happy Face” from Bye Bye Birdie.
The featured group for the evening will be the band’s flute section. Flutists Anne Albright, Kim Bohler, Jessica Ditty-Schlaich and Tami Tennison will be featured on the “Flutopia.” “Flutopia” was composed by former Miami University marching band director David Shaffer for his flute-playing friends.
