GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave volleyball team honored Greenville City workers and Mayor Whitaker for their quick response to cleaning up the city following the May tornado that ripped through the City Park and Greenville Union Cemetery.

The recognition ceremony came between Tuesday night’s JV and Varsity volleyball games. The JV and Varsity swept the visiting Xenia Lady Buccaneers in both matches.

“This is very much appreciated,” said Greenville Mayor Jeff Whitaker. “The young people in our community recognize what everybody in city government does, particularly the street department when the park got annihilated because they are so visible.”

“We have terrific kids,” said Greenville head volleyball coach Michelle Hardesty. “Every year, we try to do a community service game where we honor something. This year, the girls thought it would be a great idea to honor our street and city workers who worked tirelessly to clean Greenville up after the tornado last spring.”

“Greenville is a beautiful city; the park is beautiful, and we want to see it back to where it was,” added Hardesty. “Aubrey Baumgardner spearheaded it and did an excellent job. Our sophomores are in charge of this campaign. Our girls worked together, so kudos to them; we appreciate their work.”

The volleyball program members made a presentation to Mayor Whitaker, Matt Meyers, Street Superintendent, and Rob Weyant, maintenance and electrician.

“It means a lot to us,” Meyers, a 2002 GHS alum said of the presentation. “Some days, you think it’s a thankless job, but it means a lot to us when they do things like this.”

Meyers, a Greenville Senior High School graduate, appreciates the local support he and his staff receive.

“We have a great group of guys and an administration that helps us,” added Meyers. “That is appreciated and makes our jobs a lot easier.”

“That’s the future of Greenville,” Mayor Whitaker concluded. “These kids are outstanding. All our kids that participate in extracurricular activities get it, understand what community is about, and understand how important sports and extracurricular activities are to their development and mental attitude.”
