GREENVILLE – Greenville Senior High School honored its spring athletes with the school’s annual Spring Sports Awards night.
“Spring is a season that is over before you realize it,” said Greenville Athletic Director Aaron Shaffer. “It’s a short season, a bunch of great athletes, senior athletes are wrapping up their careers. It’s nice to see the effort and energy and the competitiveness they put into it, but also for a group of them, it’s coming to an end, so it is bittersweet.”

Coach Shaffer welcomed GHS athletes, family, and friends to the event. He introduced each spring sports varsity coach for the introduction of teams and coaching staffs: Adam Eberwein, Baseball; Jerrod Newland, Softball; Bill Plessinger, Track and Field; and Sam Bowers, Boys’ Tennis.
“We have great parents,” Shaffer said. “They support their kids, they take them to and from practice, provide them with food, washing uniforms, all the things that it takes to let our kids shine on the court or field or the track. It all comes from our parents.”

“We have a great group of kids who work hard, they are committed, good students,” he continued. “They get that from their parents, that comes from home. I am thankful to have great parents like we do, and it’s nice to have people supportive of our athletic programs.”
Shaffer took time to thank Greenville Superintendent Doug Frieze for his many years of service to Greenville City Schools.

“Tonight was his last sports awards ceremony as our Superintendent, obviously, he’s retiring,” Shaffer noted. “He had a fantastic career here as a school counselor, baseball and basketball coach … more known for basketball, but was also our baseball coach. With those things alone, he made a tremendous impact on our community, and then to come back as a superintendent, it has been great.”

“He was superintendent building the new school and renovating the high school, he’s seen us put in turf, a new track facility, a field house, and now a stadium,” continued Shaffer. “Helped guide us through a pandemic, a tornado. It hasn’t been an easy 10 years with all the hard work, but I wish him all the best, a great man, a great educator, and our athletic department greatly appreciates his work in our community.”
One of the highlights of the evening was Coach Shaffer welcoming Coach Jeff Martin back to his duties as assistant athletic director following a recent illness.
