TROY—The Greenville Lady Wave defeated Troy 2-1 to sweep the Lady Trojans 2-0 in MVL play on the season and upped their conference record to 14-1 while getting the program’s 20th regular season win.
“It was a Great fast-pitch softball game—a quick one here at Troy,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “It was a big win, a quick game, a good scrappy group, and we’re just happy to get out of here with a 2-1 win.”
“Today was a fast game, and when they have opportunities, you have to make plays,” Newland added, “and both teams did that today and the better team won.”
Greenville took a second-inning 1-0 lead with all action coming with two outs beginning with a Kendall Cromwell line drive double to left, an Addie Burke walk, and a run-scoring single off the bat of senior shortstop Savannah Leach.
The Lady Wave added a run in the top of the fourth with a leadoff Mahayla Cook hard-hit grounder to left. A passed ball moved Cook to second and a ground out to short had Cook sliding into third on the throw to first. Burke sent a one-out RBI grounder back to the mound with Troy’s pitcher getting the out of first and Cook racing home on the throw for Greenville’s second score of the night to lead 2-0.
Troy answered with a triple down the line to right, just fair by a foot, and a single to right, plating a Lady Trojans run, all coming with two outs to make it a 2-1 score with four innings in the book.
The two MVL teams played scoreless ball over the final three innings, giving the Lady Wave a well-played game that earned them the win … and the 2024 MVL sweep.
“We had runners on in five of those seven innings we left on base, and in big games, you have to clutch up, so that meant we had six or seven at-bats where we could have busted it open,” Newland stated. “Troy either made the play, their third baseman made three or four great plays today, but in big games, we have to bust those open and get ready to roll.”
“Another step towards our goal,” added Newland. Today, we had our Twentieth win, which is awesome for the seniors and the program. It’s just fun stuff—we’re getting there.”
Zoey Burns went the distance, throwing a four-hitter for the Lady Wave, allowing one earned run and one walk while striking out eight Lady Trojans.
“Sharp-on … Zoey, Denny (pitching coach), and Kendall (catcher) were very lights out tonight,” said Newland. “Zoey pitched great; she K’d eight and made some plays.”
Leach paced the Lady Wave at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI; Cook went 1-3 with a run scored; Cromwell was 1-3, a double; Kylar Arnett went 1-4; Burke had a walk and 1 RBI; Skylar Bryson had a run, and Haleigh had a walk.
Six Lady Wave seniors traveled to Troy for the MVL win bringing notice from Coach Newland.
“How cool is their week this week – think about it,” Newland said. “You get the No. 1 seed in the tournament, you get your senior prom, you get senior day this week, you get your 20th win today. What a great thing as an 18-year-old student-athlete. It’s starting to get May, and the weather is changing, win the 20th game, win a league game, and get a chance this week senior day for the six great kids, great families.”
“Prom this week for them; they get all dressed up and get all ready for next week when the tournament starts,” Coach Newland added. “So excited for these last three league games before the tournament games and you get blessed enough to play three home games for the tournament. So proud of the kids and the team.”
