Greenville Career Art Class leaves lasting legacy

GREENVILLE – A group of talented seniors in Mrs. Hawk’s art class at Greenville High School has left a lasting mark on their school and community by creating a vibrant mural for the office of Superintendent Julie Jones. The collaborative artwork celebrates the rich history, culture, and recognizable landmarks of Greenville, Ohio, while showcasing the creativity and dedication of Greenville’s student artists.

The mural, which now hangs prominently in Superintendent Jones’ office, features the words “Greenville Wave” stretched across multiple panels. Within each letter, students painted scenes and landmarks that reflect the character and heritage of the community. The design transforms the school’s identity into a visual journey through Greenville, highlighting locations and symbols that residents know and cherish.

Among the landmarks included in the mural are several iconic Greenville sites. Viewers can recognize the historic architecture of downtown buildings, the well-known Maid-Rite Drive-In, local street signs, fountains, and other community features that have become symbols of Greenville pride. Each section of the mural tells part of the city’s story, connecting the school to the community it serves.

The project provided students with an opportunity to apply the artistic skills they have developed throughout their high school careers. From initial sketches and design planning to painting and assembling the final installation, the seniors worked together to ensure that every detail reflected both artistic excellence and community spirit. The mural required teamwork, creativity, and careful attention to detail, making it a meaningful capstone project for the graduating artists.

Mrs. Hawk guided the students throughout the process, encouraging them to think about how art can bring people together and preserve local history. By incorporating recognizable Greenville landmarks, the students created more than a decorative piece—they produced a visual tribute to their hometown and the experiences that have shaped them during their years in the Greenville City Schools.

Superintendent Julie Jones expressed appreciation for the students’ work and the thoughtfulness behind the design. The mural serves as a reminder of the strong connection between Greenville High School and the broader community. It also highlights the importance of arts education in fostering creativity, collaboration, and civic pride among students.

As these seniors prepared to graduate, their mural will remain as a lasting legacy. Future students, staff, and visitors will see a colorful representation of Greenville’s history and spirit each time they enter the superintendent’s office. Through their talent and dedication, the students in Mrs. Hawk’s art class have created a piece of art that celebrates both their school and the community they call home.

The mural stands as a testament to the power of student creativity and the pride that Greenville students have in their city… a legacy painted one brushstroke at a time.
