EATON – Eaton’s girls’ basketball team overcame a double-digit first half deficit to take a 54-48 win in their season opener. The Eagles opened at home against Greenville on Friday, Nov. 18.
Eaton struggled offensively in the first half and trailed 26-18 at the break. They picked things up in the third quarter outscoring the Green Wave 14-9 to pull within three, 35-32.
The fourth quarter proved to be the key to the win as Eaton scored 22 points to take the 54-48 win.
Lily Shepherd led the Eagles’ offense with 26 points.
Shepherd is one of Eaton’s key returning players from last season. She was a First Team All-SWBL West Division selection last year, along with senior Olivia Baumann. Shepherd was top 5 in scoring last season averaging 13 points per game. Baumann led the SWBL in rebounding with 11.6 rpg and added 9 points per game.
Kendall Miller was an SWBL Honorable Mention selection in 2021-22.
Eaton plays in the West Division of the Southwestern Buckeye League, along with Madison, Brookville, Carlisle and Valley View. They finished second in the standings last season at 7-6, behind Valley View, 11-2.
Eaton is scheduled to travel to Franklin on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and Bellbrook on Monday, Nov. 28.
National Trail opens season 2-0
National Trail’s girls’ varsity basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a pair of wins. The Blazers opened the season defeating Belmont, 56-40, on Friday, Nov. 18. They followed up on Saturday with a 43-36 win over Franklin Monroe.
NT jumped out to a quick lead with a 20-point first quarter against Belmont. They held a 15-point edge at halftime, 29-14. NT was able to maintain that lead in the second half to take the 16-point win.
Natalie Osswald led the team with 13 points (including three 3-pointers) and six rebounds. Josie Stiner added seven points and six rebounds. Ashlynne Osbourne had eight points and six boards.
The Blazers put together a 17-point second quarter against FM and led 25-16 at the half. They were able to maintain that advantage in the second half, to take a 43-36 win.
Osswald led the Blazers again with eight points.
National Trail is scheduled to play at Tri-County North on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
Tri-County North splits two to open 2022-23
Tri-County North’s girls’ basketball team opened the season with a split of two games. TCN opened the season at Northridge on Friday, Nov. 18, and then hosted Carlisle on Saturday.
The Panthers suffered a one-point loss to Northridge, 45-44. TCN built a 28-17 lead in the first half, but Northridge got back into the game in the third quarter, cutting TCN’s lead to one, 35-34. Northridge edged TCN 11-9 in the final period.
TCN bounced back on Saturday with a 35-18 win. After an even first quarter, North took control in the second period with an 11-2 run.
TCN will host National Trail on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
