BRADFORD – The Railroaders defeated Logan County’s Calvary Christian Spartans 68-58 in non-conference Saturday night varsity boys basketball.

“They played a very good game,” Bradford coach Alex Swabb said of Calvary Christian. “I was very impressed with how they came out; they hit every shot for 90 percent of that game they needed to hit. They shot incredibly well and I am very proud of how we weathered the storm, battled, and consistently didn’t let how well they were playing affect what we did on the other end.”

Calvary jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the opening five minutes of play before settling on an opening quarter 19-16 advantage with Bradford’s 5’8” junior Greg Chowning accounting for eight points, including two 3-pointers while the team’s leading scorer, Owen Canan was held to one 3-pointer.

“Greg (Chowning) and Avery (Felver), when Owen (Canan) hadn’t quite got started in the early first half, were doing a very good job of spacing the floor out for us when they were in zone and making them pull out of it because of how successful we were in what we were doing,” Swabb stated.

Owen Canan drained a Bradford 3-pointer at 5:02 in the second, giving the Railroaders a 23-21 lead before the teams would settle on a 31-31 halftime score, with Bradford taking period No. 2 by a 15-12 count with Canan accounting for six second-quarter points.

Canan had the third-quarter hot hand for Bradford, knocking down 12 points, including two 3-pointers, while Calvary was hanging around to score 14 points for a 49-45 Roaders lead with one period to play.

“Owen (Canan) did a very good job getting everything started, getting everybody comfortable,” said Coach Swabb. “I know Avery (Felver), Greg (Chowning), Rallie (Wirrig), and Zage (Harleman), even though it doesn’t always show up on the scoreboard points wise made some phenomenal passes tonight that translated to assists and very big points, especially down the stretch in the fourth quarter.”

Bradford gradually pulled away in the fourth, taking the period 19-13 with 6’4 sophomore Rallie WIrrig hitting for six points, including 4-4 at the free throw line, Canan accounted for six points, Channing added five points, and Avery Felver added a 2-point bucket giving the home standing Railroaders a solid second half win.

“We’re getting better one step at a time,” Swabb said. “I could sit here and say I wish we were always better, but I am very happy with what we’ve done up to this point. We are consistently getting better every single day, and that is all I can ask of us.”

Canan led Bradford and all scorers with a game-high 27 points.
