Ansonia Tigers football team explodes for 64 first half points in win over Dixie

ANSONIA – The Ansonia Tigers wasted little time disposing of the visiting Dixie Greyhounds putting 64 points on the first half board while keeping the visitors scoreless sending the teams to the break with Ansonia holding a commanding a 64-0 halftime lead.

Coach Hall showed a lot of class with wholesale substitutions with his starting team’s work done for the night, inserting his JV team with nearly seven minutes remaining in the second quarter.

“They’re a young team and we got up on them,” said Coach Hall. “It’s good for our JV guys to have a chance to play on Friday night. They like to do that. They got in and got after it tonight too.”

Garrett Stammen got the Tigers on the board at 10:20 in the opening quarter with a 53-yard touchdown run followed by a Keegen Weiss 2-point conversion run to lead 8-0.

Ansonia held the Greyhounds to three and out with Weiss scampering 42-yards on the Tigers first play from scrimmage. Nick Burns’ 2-point conversion run was good giving the home team a 16-0 lead with 8:11 showing on the first quarter clock.

The Tigers defense once again held the visitors to a three and out setting up a 49-yard Landyn Bowman 49-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage followed with a Nick Burns to 2-point conversion pass to Wyatt Spencer giving Ansonia a 24-0 advantage with 5:49 remaining of the first quarter clock.

With the Tiger’s defense keeping Dixie in check, Weise raced for a 14-yard TD run with Burns making good on the 2-point conversion run upping Ansonia’s first quarter lead to 32-0 with 0:32 on the board where the score would stand after one period of action.

“You can give credit to Dixie,” Hall stated. “It was a tough game, they played hard to the end   you can see they are much improved from last year, they’re getting older, we have a ton of upper classmen, we’ve had years where we weren’t what we are now but it’s what everyone is working for here

Ansonia took advantage of a Burns to Trevor Hemmerich 44-yard touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion pass Burns to Ethan Reichert to give the Tigers a 40-0 lead at 10:09 in the second.

The Tigers defense once again put the ball back in the hands of the offense for Weiss to race 71-yards for 71-yard TD and Spencer making good on the 2-point conversion giving Ansonia a 48-0 lead early in the second quarter with 8:17 showing on the game clock bring wholesale substitution from the Ansonia bench.

Sophomore Layne Bowman carried for a 28-yard touchdown at 5:23 in the third followed by a 2-point conversion upping the Tigers lead to 56-0 with 5:23 left in the first half.

Ansonia freshman, Cade Shellhaas intercepted his first of two second have interceptions returning the ball 45-yards to the Tigers 30-yard line.

Tigers freshman, Kameron Ingle carried for a 29-yard and Nate Good made good on the 2-point conversion to close out Tigers’ first half scoring at 64-0 with 0:57.2 on the clock.

The teams played the entire second half under a running clock with the line score coming from the Greyhounds on a 29-yard touchdown pass with the Tiger’s defense stopping the 2-point conversion attempt for a final 64-6 Tigers WOAC victory.

“There’s a lot of good things, I’m sure there are things that have to get fixed,” Coach Hall concluded. “We just have to keep getting better each week.”

With the win, Ansonia goes to 3-0 on the young season outscoring their opponents 150-20. Dixie takes its first loss of the season falling to 2-1 while still outscoring its opposition 114-81.
