On a beautiful fall Sunday here in West Central Ohio there’s no main topic in today’s award winner but lots of random thoughts for your reading pleasure!
Karma prevailed at Greenville’s Homecoming game with Sidney Friday evening. Four years ago, the Yellow Jackets went back to Shelby County with a 49-48 overtime win over the Wave as the home team went for a game-winning two-point conversion only to fall a yard short of the end zone. This time the Wave claimed the win with a 14-yard scoring pass from Grady Looker to Isaac Kerg as time expired to retain possession of the Little Brown Jug. The 41-40 thriller brought the crowd pouring onto the Alumni Stadium field and moved the Wave record to 2-4 in MVL action. Next up for the Green and White, a home date with powerful Tippecanoe.
Tipp and Troy both remained undefeated in conference play and appear headed to a title showdown on October 16th at Troy’s Memorial Stadium.
Staying in the MVL, Butler and Tipp have a huge league encounter as the two volleyball squads meet for a second time this season. Butler is undefeated, having beaten defending state champion Tipp earlier in the season. The Lady Red Devils will seek revenge as they host the Lady Aviators on October 15th with league honors on the line. Greenville’s Lady Wave are tied for third with Troy in the Miami Division of the MVL.
Congratulations to the Greenville girls and boys golf teams on taking home MVL titles! The girls title was a first since 2022, the boys a first since a 2004 GWOC West championship. The boys move on to OHSAA D-I Southwest District tournament action Monday the 5th at Heatherwoode Golf Club, while freshman Piper Jenkinson will play as an individual at the same course on Tuesday the 6th.
Continuing with scholastic action, Tri-Village, Arcanum, and Ansonia continue to dominate WOAC football competition. Things will come to a head the last two weeks of the regular season as the currently undefeated Trojans tangle with the once-beaten Tigers on the 16th at Ansonia and then host the Patriots on the 23rd.
Best of luck to Arcanum’s girls golf team, National Trail’s boys linksters, and Versailles’ Ethan Phlipot as they advanced to the state tournament, with all competing at the Firestone Country Club in D-II on the 11th and 12th.
Finally, congratulations to Greenville Lady Wave netters who qualified for district play at Mason’s Linder Center on the 8th—representing the Green and White are Riley Capasso in D-II singles and Meadow Murphy and Callie Zwiesler in D-II doubles action.
A few more quick hitters—
The White Sox face the Guardians in the AL Division series while the Rays match up with the Yankees in the other bracket. In the NL, it’s the Dodgers and the Braves while the Padres and Brewers square off. I’m pulling for anybody but the Yankees and Dodgers!!
For those interested, the WNBA has reached the playoff semifinal stage with the Liberty and Dream meeting and the Aces and Valkyries tipping off in the best-of-five series. Can you name the cities those franchises represent?
The only major upset in college football at the FBS level came when Missouri knocked off #8 Florida 45-17 while most other games went according to the oddsmakers. However, check out these scores: the Lewis and Clark River Otters took down more timber than the Loggers of Puget Sound University 74-14; the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens pecked away at the La Verne Leopards 34-12; and the Whitworth Pirates caught the Pacific Boxers with their shorts down 41-6.
Can you believe the Browns are 3-1 and the Bengals, following a tough loss to a strong Jaguars team, sit at 2-2 in the AFC North?
From the “gone too soon” category, Janis Joplin passed away fifty-six years ago from a heroin overdose on October 4th, 1970 at the age of 27. Her unique voice was instrumental in the success of first the psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company and later as a soloist who had such hits as her cover versions of “Me and Bobby McGee”, “Piece of my Heart”, and “Down on Me” plus an original version of “Mercedes Benz”.
Finally, it’s the New York Liberty, Atlanta Dream, Las Vegas Aces, and the Golden State Valkyries. If you got those correct, you are a true pro basketball aficionado! Have a great week!
