NEW MADISON – The Ansonia Boys Track Team won the 2025 Western Ohio Athletic Conference Track & Field Championship.

It would be a competitive meet, with the Tigers notching out first place with 138 points for back-to-back championships. They have won the title three out of the first four years of the WOAC Conference, with Twin Valley South winning the title in 2022-23.

The Newton Indians finished second with 99 points, and Arcanum was third with 74.

It was a record-setting Track and Field event, with 12 new WOAC meet records set in the 17 events scored.

Milesplit, the official timekeeper, also tracks elite performances among all high school athletes for each state and the nation, and five elite performances were registered in Ohio.

They were Seth Coker of Newton in the 400m, 49.26, Tri-Village’s Noah Finkbine 6-6 in High Jump, Ansonia’s Cade Shellhaas 15’ in Pole Vault, Tri-Village’s Dominic Black with a 52-9 in shot put and Preble Shawnee’s  Cooper Shrout with a 53-0.5 in the shot.

Preble Shawnee junior Cooper Shrout took home the WOAC Field Athlete of the Year for the 2nd year in a row. (Dale Barger photo)

Cooper Shrout won both throwing events, setting new league records in shot 53-0.5 and in discus with a toss of 147 feet. His throws earned him the WOAC 2025 Field Athlete of the Year award, repeating the feat he accomplished in 2024.

There were a number of impressive running performances, but two Ansonia runners would emerge as WOAC 2025 Co-Runners of the Year, sophomore Cade Shellhaas and senior Brayden Bromagem.

Shellhaas broke records in both the 110m and 300m Hurdles.  He ran the 110m and won in a record time of 15.10 and the 300m in 40.86. Shellhaas was also a member of the 4×200 winning relay team that set a record at 1:30.98, and Cade won the Pole Vault, setting a new league record at 15’.  He would earn WOAC 2025 Co-Runner of the Year honors.

Ansonia senior Brayden Bromagem was also named the WOAC Co-Runner of the Year. (Dale Barger photo)

Bromagem shattered the league record in the 100m dash with a flat 11.0 in prelims and in the finals, which he won, ran 11.36.  He was also a member of the 4×200 winning relay team that set a record at 1:30.98, was second in the 200m, and was named WOAC 2025 Co-Runner of the Year.

Newton’s Seth Coker also turned in notable performances, setting records in both the 200m and 400m runs. Coker won the 400m dash with a record time of 49.26 and set a record in the 200m with a 22.80 in prelims, but slipped into 6th place in the finals.

In the 800m and 1600 m, Ansonia teammates sophomore Bennett Lehman and senior Ethan Sparks were a 1-2 combo. Lehman won both the 800m in 4:36.19 and 1600m in 2:02.01, with Sparks finishing just behind in both events for 2nd place.

This would be the third league championship for Ansonia boys’ track and field coach Clint Neil, who, along with girls’ coach Craig Riethman, basically coaches both programs across the board.

Coach Neil talked about winning the team championship again.

“We knew going in that if we did our job, that things were going to come out the way we wanted, so the focus was to dial in on the details all week and stay together, make sure to keep each other in line. It’s a long two days, and so to be there for each other and to do your job. And that’s what they did,” Neil stated.

Not everything went perfectly or according to plan, but the coaching staff plans for contingency, and they would be pushed by the Newton and Arcanum’.

“Everything went according to plan. I mean, there’s a couple races where we finished maybe second instead of first. But we kind of planned for those things, for the worst-case scenario, so if it doesn’t happen, we’re still sitting okay with total points. We knew Newton was going to come in and push us a little bit. Fortunately, things just went our way, and we were hitting PRs, and hitting those goals we had in mind,” Neil concluded.

The Tigers will look to continue their success with the District Meet coming up this week.
