GREENVILLE – Former Greenville Mayor Steve Willman was sworn in by Mayor Jeff Whitaker as the new Greenville City Council member at large, filling the seat vacated by newly appointed City Council President Doug Schmidt.
“I think I can help make sure things go well for this city and have a voice for many different people in the community,” Willman stated. “I have a lot of experience of what has been going on in the past for the last eight to 10 years, so I look forward to doing it again.”
“It’s great to have our former mayor back serving the city on the council,” said Mayor Whitaker. “We’re looking forward to working with Steve. We’ve been friends and get along well, and I think he will be an asset to the council, with a little bit of level-headedness and a lot of knowledge. It’s going to benefit everybody.”
Willman will attend his first council meeting on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
“I enjoy working on things, trying to get things done and make things better,” he said.
Willman will work to help pass a renewal levy that recently failed.
“I think we are missing the boat as far as the community not passing the levy,” Willman said. “That’s the big thing on everybody’s mind, and I don’t think anything is wrong with the community.”
“I think the second one will go through,” added Willman. “I think it’s just a little more communication, make sure people realize it’s not going to raise their taxes more, it’s a renewal.”
Willman served as mayor of Greenville from 2016 until the end of his term in 2023.
