GREENVILLE — Greenville Mayor Jeff Whitaker commended Street Department Superintendent Matt Myers and his crew for their swift and effective response in clearing city streets following the significant snowstorm that moved through the area over the weekend.
“I can’t say enough about how well prepared and on top of things our Street Department is during these snowstorms, and their near-immediate response in getting the roads cleared,” Whitaker said. “From Saturday evening throughout Sunday, the snow came down heavily, and by Monday morning—even though we were under a Level 2 snow emergency and schools and many businesses were closed—anyone who really needed to travel was able to do so without a lot of difficulty.”
Whitaker acknowledged the challenges crews face during major snow events, particularly with the large number of streets requiring attention and the difficulty of plowing around parked vehicles.
“With the great number of streets that need plowing, it’s difficult to plow around cars that may be parked along the street without having snow piled up around them,” Whitaker said. “We realize that in many cases, that’s a necessary situation. The same can be said for the ends of driveways.”
The mayor emphasized the complexity of the task during heavy snowfall, noting that crews often have limited options when there is simply nowhere to push the accumulating snow.
“I know everyone is trying to do their best when plowing the streets, especially when there’s a tremendous amount of snow and, in many cases, nowhere to go with it,” Whitaker said. “It’s a very difficult job, and I just ask that everyone remain patient.”
Whitaker concluded by praising the dedication of Myers and his team.
“We all know that Matt Myers and his crew take great pride in the work they do and want to get all the streets clear as soon as possible,” he said. “They do a tremendous job.”
