Weekly OSU Extension Newsletter: June 6, 2026

I hope this Newsletter finds you well. After an extended wet period where it seemed some ground may never dry out, the warmer, sunny weather of the past week has allowed for more field activity, and has also caused a big jump in progress for many of the crops in the ground (https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?OH). Sidedressing of nitrogen fertilizer has been a common occurrence, in addition to pesticide applications, some planting, and making hay. Common weeds in the fields include poison hemlock, Canada thistle, jimsonweed, and lambsquarter, among others.

If you’re interested in the next Darke County Garden Roundtable,  our next session will be held at the OSU Extension Office on Thursday, June 18th at 6:00 p.m. We’ll be focusing on Summer Insect Pest Management and our Plant of the Month is Potatoes.

While the rain has slowed, you may still be interested in the idea of using  Rain Barrels. If you’re interested in learning more on that topic, I hope to see you at Worch Library on June 25th at 4:00 p.m.

There is still plenty of opportunity to get your soil sampled for Soybean Cyst Nematode thanks to the Ohio Soybean Council. Let me know if you’re interested in sending in samples, or if you would like me to join you in the fields to help gather samples.

Wheat growers may be interested in attending the 2026 Wheat Field Day, hosted at the Western Agricultural Research Station on June 17th. This event will feature updates and insights on Ohio wheat production, and give you a chance to check out some field trials. Reach out to me for more details, or learn more at the following link: https://agcrops.osu.edu/newsletter/corn-newsletter/2026-16/2026-wheat-field-day-june-17-western-agricultural-research.

The next Darke County Ag Breakfast will be Friday, June 19th at 7:30 a.m. at Jack’s Cabin in Greenville.

This week’s Newsletter topics include:

Dairy Economic Outlook

Fertilizer Cost Bill Introduced in U.S. Senate

Fungicide Applications on Corn Silage

Growing Blueberries in the Home Garden

May 2026 WASDE Report Outlook

I hope you enjoy this week’s Newsletter, and as always, never hesitate to reach out to me and let me know how I can best serve you and all of Darke County.

Best,
