The Greenville boys varsity tennis team won its eighth straight with a 5-0 win over the visiting Cavaliers.

“Great wins across the board, very happy for Senior Mason Middlestetter getting a big win on senior night and everyone else pulling off great team wins as well,” said Greenville coach, Sam Bowers.

Also winning on the night was senior, Kelly Combs winning her JV match.

“Proud of Kelly Combs winning her JV match as well on her senior night,” Coach Bowers stated.

“Kelly & Mason are two seniors that have been an absolute blast to coach and with it being my first year coaching I’ve appreciated their leadership and leaning on them,” said Bowers.

“This is Kelly’s her first year coming out for tennis and she has been an awesome one to have on our team in general just because she has been a fun attitude and personality to have on the team,” said Bowers. “It was fun to watch her come to our first open court one month before the season and barely knew how to hit a tennis ball but she’s athletic enough to where she’s at now.”

“She’s been our varsity substitute when we had kids out and she is 2-0 in her varsity matches she has played,” he added. “Super glad she came out – I wish we would have gotten our claws in her as a freshman for us but it’s been fun to have her as a senior.”

“Mason Middlestetter is definitely the leader of our team,” Bowers said. “He holds down the second singles spot for us. He would have been out for tennis four years but he was a victim of one of the COVID years for us obviously and he’s been a team player.”

“He’s played third singles for varsity, he’s played first doubles and had a really good doubles career last year for us and then second singles he’s really held it down this year,” Coach Bowers continued. “He started out slow and he’s really figured it out this year. e’Hs 11-5 on the season and he’s had a really good year. He’s playing really good tennis right now and battling through and injury as well so really impressed by him and with the leadership being provided by him as our one varsity senior.”

With the Friday night non-conference win Greenville improves to 10-7 on the season.
