LA CROSSE, Wis. — Montaous Walton is making his mark on the Western Technical College baseball program as he enters his second season with the Cavaliers.
Walton, who serves as associate head baseball coach and recruiting coordinator, has brought an energetic and aggressive approach to recruiting as Western Technical looks to build a program capable of competing for a postseason berth.
Head coach Joshua Knoll and the Western Technical athletic department added Walton to the coaching staff last summer, bringing aboard a coach with experience at several levels of college baseball.
Walton’s coaching background has taken him through Ohio, Mississippi and Minnesota, giving him experience and recruiting connections in multiple regions. His résumé also includes NCAA Division I experience at Mississippi Valley State University.
Recruiting has become one of Walton’s strengths. His ability to identify players, build relationships and promote a program has earned recognition from coaching peers, including those at the Division I level.
While Walton’s experience and recruiting ability could eventually create opportunities at higher levels of college baseball, his focus remains on helping Western Technical improve.
Walton said developing a successful program requires players to demonstrate the same commitment away from the field that they show between the lines.
“We’re ready to work, and we will get it done,” Walton said. “We just have to make sure our guys compete every day on the baseball field as well as in the classroom.”
That approach fits with Western Technical’s efforts to develop its baseball program and establish a winning culture.
Walton’s recruiting responsibilities will play an important role in that process as the Cavaliers seek players who can contribute athletically while meeting expectations academically.
With Knoll and his staff working to move the program forward, Walton believes the Cavaliers have an opportunity to make significant progress.
For Walton, the immediate goal isn’t about where his coaching career might eventually take him. It is about helping Western Technical become a consistent contender and building a program that players want to join.
As his second season with the Cavaliers approaches, Walton continues to establish himself in La Crosse and throughout the college baseball recruiting community.
The Cavaliers hope his energy, experience and recruiting ability will help Western Technical take the next step toward becoming a postseason contender.
