GREENVILLE – This year’s Great Darke County Fair witnessed an exceptional turnout as the community united to honor its Veterans.
The ceremony at the Grandstand featured Welcome and Opening Remarks by Bruce Shaw, the outgoing County Commander, who set the tone for the day. Attendees stood in respect as units lined up for review, followed by the Introduction of Units by Jim Kammer, the American Legion County Adjutant & Finance Officer.
Richard Cutler, Chaplain of Hollansburg Post 708, delivered an Invocation, invoking blessings for the Veterans and attendees. The crowd joined in a stirring rendition of the National Anthem led by Andrew Weubker, the 2023 Darke County Jr. Fair King from Versailles High School.
Bruce Shaw then led the Pledge of Allegiance, reinforcing the values that unite the nation. The Guest Speaker, Chris Emmons, American Legion 3rd District Commander, American Legion Post 707, inspired the audience with stories of valor and commitment from local Veterans.
A poignant moment followed with the 3 Volley Rifle Salute performed by the Greenville American Legion Post 140, and the solemn sound of Taps, echoing through the gathering as a tribute to the sacrifices made.
Richard Cutler returned to offer the Benediction, closing the ceremony with words of hope and remembrance. Bruce Shaw expressed Special Thanks and Introductions to those who made the event possible, before delivering Closing Remarks and Dismissal, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of pride and community.
After the ceremony, Eric Fee with Tribute Funeral Homes, provided a free dinner for all Veterans and their spouses, highlighting the county’s unwavering commitment to recognizing those who have bravely defended our freedom.
Eric Fee expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “We served 620 veterans and wives. I’m just honored to be a part of such a great thing and be able to serve the ones that served us. Because of the great turnout, we’re planning on 800+ next year. I just want to thank all the Veterans for their service and what they’ve done, and I wish we could serve them every day for what they’ve done for us.”
The event not only celebrated the sacrifices of Veterans but also showcased the community’s support, with numerous organizations stepping up to offer their time and resources. With plans already in motion for next year’s event, the organizers aim to make it even more memorable.
As the county looks forward to next year, the commitment to honoring Veterans remains strong, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten. Plans are already underway to make next year’s event even more impactful, with hopes of serving over 800 Veterans and their spouses.
