NEW MADISON – Tri-Village has had a number of 1,000-point career scorers over the last 12 years and the career scoring record has changed hands a few times as well with the latest to do that being senior guard Trey Sagester.
Drew Moore set a new record in 2011 with 1454 and that record stood for 11 years until broken in 2022 by Layne Sarver with 1,911.
Coming into the game Trey Sagester needed nine points to become the school’s all-time leading scorer and shortly into the third quarter he connected on a 17’ jumper with two hands in his face to do just that.
It would be points 1,911 and 1912 eclipsing the mark set by 2022 graduate Layne Sarver who led the Patriots to the state championship game that season.
After a quick acknowledgement and a hug from coach and dad Josh Sagester, who would present Trey the game ball. Trey jogged into the stands to get a hug from his mom and give her the prized possession to hold onto.
After the game coach Sagester talked about Trey’s achievement.
“Well, I’m really proud as a coach and his father the Tri-Village basketball program is awful good, very strong. So, for him to be our all-time leading scorer speaks volumes about him and about the team’s he’s played with and have put him in a really good position to be where he is. Obviously he’s a very skilled young man, and when you can score in as many ways as he does. And even though they did a nice job on him tonight, he’s just able to find ways whether that’s a steal, an offensive rebound or a pull up for three school, he can score in so many ways and why he’s on pace to get 2000, so we want to keep him healthy and all those good things,” coach Sagester beamed.
When talking to Trey about the all-time scoring record he was quick to mention the importance of winning the WOAC championship first.
“Obviously, I think the WOAC title was more special than the record that I broke tonight,” Trey said.
The record goes to everybody, not just me. They have to pass me the ball get me open. So, thanks to everybody on the team that I’ve played with through these four years, that’s a big accomplishment for me, but also the teams I played with four years,” Trey added. and the
Getting the win improved the Patriots overall record to 20-0 and the goal is to finish the regular season strong and make a long tournament run.
“Winning a league championship and going 20-0 are two boxes we can check off, goals we had at the beginning of the year,” Sagester stated.
“We got two more regular seasons. Hopefully we can chop those off, go 22 and oh, and get ready for tournament and make a big run tournament,’ he added. ,
“Setting the record was pretty special especially tonight with a packed house and our crowd behind us. To do that at home and to be able to share that with everyone meant a lot,’ Trey said.
One of the special moments to was being able to share it with his mom Tracy.
“Yeah, my mom, she’s been to every game. She’s such a big supporter, so to give her that hug during the game was indeed pretty special,” Trey concluded
It was a special night for a special team looking to do a few more special things before the year is done.
