Traffic stop leads to Fentanyl arrest

PREBLE COUNTY – On July 22, 2026, deputies stopped a 2001 Mercedes traveling on IS 70 in Preble County for multiple traffic violations.

Deputies noticed indicators of possible criminal activity. A K-9 from Eaton PD was requested. K-9 Ruger alerted to the vehicle and a probable cause search was conducted.

A female passenger in the vehicle admitted to possessing suspected Fentanyl on her person. Deputies seized approximately (1) ounce of suspected Fentanyl. Deputies also located drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. Both the driver and passenger admitted to driving from Indiana to Montgomery County to purchase the drug.

The driver, Eric L. Lavengood, age 37, and the passenger, Afton R. Hurd, age 39, both of Marion, Indiana, have been formally charged in Eaton Municipal Court with Trafficking in Fentanyl – Related Compound, a 1st Degree Felony; Possession of Fentanyl – Related Compound, a 1st Degree Felony; and Illegal Use or Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a 4th Degree Misdemeanor.

Both remain in the Preble County Jail, where a bond has been set by the court.
