The Ultimate Gift of Family Harmony

by Eric Fee, Tribute Funeral Homes

Good to see you again, friends. We are wrapping up our look into pre-arranging today with an aspect that is incredibly close to my heart: protecting your family’s relationships.

I’ve been in the funeral industry for a long time, and if there is one thing I know for sure, it’s that grief does strange things to people. It magnifies emotions, thins patience, and can make even the closest families highly sensitive. When a parent passes away without a plan, it is incredibly common for siblings or extended family members to experience friction.

The Trap of “Good Intentions”

Family conflict at a time of loss rarely comes from a place of malice. It almost always comes from a place of love.

One sibling might remember Mom saying she wanted to be buried near her hometown. Another sibling might swear Mom changed her mind last year and wanted cremation. Both siblings want to do the right thing, but because there is no written proof, a disagreement begins. Under the heavy weight of sorrow and exhaustion, that small disagreement can quickly turn into resentment that lasts for years.

I have seen families fracture over the smallest details—not because they didn’t love each other, but because they were arguing over what they thought was best for the person they lost.

The Final Word of Love

When you take the time to sit down and put your wishes in writing, you completely eliminate the ground for arguments. You become the leader of your family one last time.

Your plan becomes the final word, and it takes the pressure off everyone else.

When your children or spouse sit down to make arrangements, there is no debating, no voting, and no second-guessing. Nobody has to carry the guilt of making an executive decision, because you already made it. They can’t argue with each other when they are simply following your direct instructions.

Pre-planning is the ultimate insurance policy for family harmony. It ensures that the people you love most stand shoulder-to-shoulder, supporting one another, rather than face-to-face in disagreement. And protecting that family bond is the greatest gift you could ever leave behind.

Thanks for reading along with me through this series. Take care of each other out there.

Starting next week, we are launching a special series focused on how to truly personalize a funeral service.
