Eaton senior Samantha Witte started in the circle for the Eagles. She allowed just two hits and one run in 3.2 innings.

Southwestern Buckeye League baseball and softball teams opened the 2023 season this week, with several teams playing non-league games to start the schedule.

Both Eaton teams were set to open at Preble Shawnee on Tuesday, March 28. The baseball team was unable to get the season started due to weather and field conditions.

Coach Maggie Neanen has made the transition from Preble Shawnee girls’ basketball to Eaton softball. Neanen led the Arrows’ basketball team to a 19-7 record, 10-1 in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference.

The softball teams, however, were able to play their season openers, with Eaton taking an 8-1 win. The Eagles were led by three players with three hits each, Olivia Baumann, Madison Copper and Tai Mize. Pitchers Samantha Witte and Sarah Abner combined to limit Preble Shawnee to four hits and one run.

Eaton softball is scheduled to play back-to-back games against Madison on March 29-30, and then host a double-header with Arcanum on Saturday, April 1.

The baseball team is scheduled to open SWBL action on Wednesday traveling to Madison. They will match up against the Mohawks again on Friday at Wright State University. In between those games, Eaton will travel to Versailles.

Eaton was 21-6 last season and tied for the top spot in the Southwestern Buckeye League West Division. The Eagles finished the season 11-2 in the SWBL, along with Carlisle. Valley View (4-8), Brookville (4-9) and Madison (2-11) rounded out the division.
