AKRON – Two of Ohio’s premier softball programs will collide Friday afternoon when the No. 2-ranked Greenville Lady Wave take on the No. 3-ranked Bloom-Carroll Lady Bulldogs in the OHSAA Division III State Semifinals at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on June 5 with a trip to the state championship game on the line.
The matchup features two programs with championship pedigrees. Bloom-Carroll enters the contest with three state titles and fresh off a 3-2 upset of the state’s No. 1-ranked team. Greenville is seeking its second state championship after capturing the program’s first crown in 2007.
While both teams have dominated opponents throughout the season, the numbers reveal two teams that will arrive in Akron by taking slightly different paths.
Greenville enters the semifinal with an impressive 31-1 record, while Bloom-Carroll comes in at 24-4.
Offensively, Bloom-Carroll owns the statistical edge in batting average, hitting .418 as a team compared to Greenville’s .400 mark. The Lady Bulldogs have collected 305 hits and scored 278 runs in 28 games while launching 41 home runs.
Greenville counters with greater overall production. The Lady Wave have accumulated 342 hits and scored 313 runs in 32 games. Greenville has also recorded 78 doubles compared to Bloom-Carroll’s 61, indicating a lineup capable of generating extra-base hits throughout the order.
The Lady Bulldogs hold the advantage in power numbers with 41 home runs compared to Greenville’s 29, while Bloom-Carroll also boasts a superior .498 on-base percentage versus Greenville’s .449.
The biggest statistical difference between the teams appears in the pitching circle.
Greenville’s pitching staff owns a remarkable 0.547 earned run average compared to Bloom-Carroll’s 3.05 ERA.
The Lady Wave have allowed just 15 earned runs all season and have posted a .969 winning percentage. Bloom-Carroll’s pitching staff has still been outstanding but enters with a .884 winning percentage.
Greenville’s dominance has been particularly evident during tournament play. The Lady Wave have outscored postseason opponents 41-0 in five tournament games, not allowing a single run.
Bloom-Carroll has also been dominant, outscoring opponents 67-2 during its five tournament victories.
Defensively, Greenville also holds an advantage.
The Lady Wave owns a .974 fielding percentage with only 18 errors in 32 games. Bloom-Carroll enters with a .944 fielding percentage and 31 errors.
In a state semifinal where runs could be at a premium, limiting mistakes may prove critical.
The matchup features several elite players who could determine the outcome.
For Bloom-Carroll, senior slugger Madelyn Gates, a Northern Kentucky University signee, has produced one of the state’s most impressive offensive seasons. Gates is batting .598 with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs.
Senior Addison Brown adds another dangerous bat, hitting .513 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs.
Junior Emma Brandt contributes on both sides of the ball. At the plate she is batting .429 with five home runs and 35 RBIs. In the circle, Brandt has posted a 1.86 ERA with a perfect 12-0 record, striking out 131 batters while walking just 15 in 86.2 innings.
Senior Maddie Walters gives the Lady Bulldogs a second pitching option with an 11-3 record and 65 strikeouts.
Greenville counters with one of Ohio’s most dominant sophomores in Ella Oswalt.
Oswalt enters the semifinal with a microscopic 0.366 ERA and a 24-1 record. She has struck out 241 batters in 134 innings while allowing only seven earned runs and 15 walks all season.
At the plate, Oswalt is equally dangerous, batting .500 with 10 home runs, 52 RBIs, and a .929 slugging percentage.
Senior Lizzie Shaffer provides Greenville with another major weapon. In the circle, Shaffer is 7-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 77 strikeouts. Offensively, she is hitting .449 with six home runs and a team-leading 54 RBIs.
Sophomore Leah Force enters batting .485 with three home runs and 31 RBIs, while freshman Jordyn McMullen has delivered a strong rookie season with a .398 batting average, five home runs, and 35 RBIs.
Bloom-Carroll’s path to victory likely rests on its explosive offense. The Lady Bulldogs possess a higher team batting average, greater home run production, and arguably the state’s most dangerous hitter in Gates.
Greenville’s advantage appears to be its combination of elite pitching, defense, and lineup depth. The Lady Wave has surrendered just one run every two games on average this season and has not allowed a run throughout the tournament.
On paper, Friday’s semifinal projects as one of the best matchups of the state tournament.
Bloom-Carroll brings superior power and a potent middle of the lineup, but Greenville’s advantages in pitching, fielding, and overall run prevention are difficult to ignore.
The numbers suggest Bloom-Carroll has the offensive firepower to challenge Greenville’s pitching staff more than any opponent the Lady Wave have faced during the postseason. However, Greenville’s combination of Oswalt and Shaffer in the circle, coupled with a defense committing fewer errors and an offense averaging nearly 10 runs per game, gives the Lady Wave a slight statistical edge heading into Friday’s showdown.
If the game follows the season-long trends, Greenville appears to have the ingredients most often associated with championship softball games: dominant pitching, strong defense, and timely offense.
Expect a tightly contested semifinal between two of Ohio’s elite Division III programs.
