COLUMBUS – Darke County was well represented at the state track and field meet, with a number of boys and girls turning in spectacular performances. But few stories stood out like Franklin Monroe junior Sydney Baker.
Just a year ago in March, Baker underwent ligament reconstruction surgery on her knee and missed her entire sophomore season. To come back this spring and place in three of four events at the state meet is nothing short of remarkable.
“I’m just very grateful to be here, and I thank my coaches, my friends, my family for getting me here, and I’m so happy to be back,” Baker said.
Baker finished as the most decorated Darke County girls athlete at state. She cleared 12’4” in the pole vault to earn state runner-up honors, taking second place.
“It was a good state meet. I vaulted really well, but I didn’t run as good as I wanted,” Baker said. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be here and represent Franklin Monroe.”
On the track, Baker added an 8th-place finish in the 100 and 9th in the 200, giving her three trips to the podium and 13 points, which was good enough to place the Jets 16th in the team standings.
Franklin Monroe enjoyed a strong season in the WOAC, finishing near the top of the league and carrying that momentum through districts and regionals with Baker leading the way.
She also anchored a solid relay group. Baker teamed with Mia Brookey, Hannah Wolfe and Quincy Cox on the 4×100 relay, which finished 12th at state. In the field events, Faith Wintrow qualified in the shot put and placed 17th with a throw of 34’-06.75”.
“It’s been a good year for us. I think we really showed up when it mattered with a district runner-up,” Baker said. “Especially being such a small team and just a few people qualifying, I think we all did our best in what we needed to do at that moment.”
Franklin Monroe will say goodbye to seniors Piper Hackney and Caydance Nichols, but the core of this year’s group returns, including Baker. With experience, health and confidence on their side, the Jets look poised to chase a WOAC title and make even more noise in the postseason next spring.
With her knee now a symbol of resilience instead of setback, Baker leaves Columbus not just with medals and points, but with a reminder of how far she’s come in a year. And with another season still ahead of her, her story — and Franklin Monroe’s — feels like it’s only getting started.
