GREENVILLE – Fort GreeneVille Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recently awarded Gail Shafer with the NSDAR Conservation Award for volunteering at Darke County Solid Waste. The NSDAR Conservation Award recognizes those with a “distinguished conservation record” who demonstrate outstanding efforts in wildlife and nature centers, resource management and park establishment, youth leadership and education, and the field of conservation.
Gail Shafer has been volunteering with the Darke County Solid Waste caps/lids recycling program since 2022. She is instrumental in recycling plastic caps/lids in order to recycle into benches and picnic tables that benefit Darke County, Ohio. In 2023, she was awarded a local award, My County Link’s August 2023 Impactful Rippler! for her conservation effort of recycling plastics.
Lynne Stallcop, National DAR Conservation Chair, responded, “I am amazed at the number of benches that Gail has been able to facilitate.”
Also in attendance to honor Gail were Darke County Commissioner Marshall Combs and Krista Fourman Unger, Darke County Solid Waste District Director. “Gail is very deserving of the DAR Conservation Award, she volunteers to work many hours sorting and sanitizing plastic bottle caps that eventually get recycled and turned into beautiful benches that get placed around the county at various locations like you see at the fairgrounds, parks, and villages. She is an important part of the recycling efforts at our DCSWD and we appreciate all the time and effort Gail puts into this cap recycling project. Congratulations Gail!,” commented Marchall Combs, Darke County Commissioner.
