GREENVILLE – Doug Schmidt, who has served the City of Greenville since 2002 as a council member ‘at-large’, was sworn in as the new Greenville Council President. Over the years, Schmidt has presided over many council meetings as President Pro Tem, when the Council President was absent.
“Doug is going to do a great job,” said Greenville Mayor Jeff Whitaker. “Doug has been around city council since 2002, and he’s been serving as Council President Pro-Tem. “He is well-liked in the community, and I know he will do a great job for us working with our administration.”

With Council President John Baumgardner retiring at the end of January, Schmidt has conducted council meetings. The Darke County Republican Central Committee appointed Doug on March 5th to complete the unexpired term of John Baumgardner through December 31st of this year.
Doug Schmidt will be on the upcoming election ballot, running for the position of Council President from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2029.
“We will appoint a councilman to take Doug’s place on the city council,” Mayor Whitaker stated. “We will be doing that within the next few weeks. That will be an appointment by the Darke County Republican Central Committee.”
