PIQUA – The Piqua City Commission on Tuesday authorized the city manager to enter into a contract agreement with Rumpke Waste & Recycling to provide refuse, recycling and yard waste collection.

The decision represents a multi-year fee savings to residential and commercial customers in the City. Fees for Rumpke service will be posted for customers following contract finalization.

The City of Piqua Sanitation Division will continue to collect refuse, recycling and yard waste as in the past until the scheduled transition. Rumpke will begin providing services to customers this spring on a date to be determined, including the same collection offerings, carts and pickup schedule as the City is using now.

During the interim period, the City of Piqua will utilize a hybrid model of service delivery utilizing employees and contracted workers to ensure that refuse is collected on schedule. As sanitation staffing levels remain critically low, please note that City crews may collect refuse and recycling together as necessary for operational considerations.

“Our employees have committed themselves to ensuring that the community is taken care of throughout this transition and into the future,” said Assistant City Manager Amy Welker. “They know their important role in supplying sanitation services to the community and will maintain the high level of customer care throughout the transition to Rumpke.”

The full-time employees of the City of Piqua Sanitation Division will be kept whole and offered the opportunity to transfer to full-time positions with the City of Piqua if they wish to stay on staff.

More information will follow from the City of Piqua and Rumpke as the organizations assist customers through a seamless transition of service.
