BRADFORD – The Newton Lady Indians defeated the Bradford Lady Railroaders 48-27 in conference play on the Roaders’ home court.
“It was great to get our first win,” said Newton coach Stefanie Landis. “We opened up with two tough teams (Wapakoneta and Arcanum). I know the girls are playing hard and were looking for that first win so it was great to have the first win, it was a great conference win. We’ll go back and work on some things and get ready for our next game.”

“We played a pretty decent three-quarters of a game,” said Bradford coach Josh Siedling. “Unfortunately, it’s a four-quarter game, but the girls saw the bright positive is Newton is a great team, and we can hang in there with a great team.”
Newton senior Rylee Hess scored seven first-quarter points, including a triple, to grab an early 14-10 lead after one period of play.

The second quarter was dominated by defense and cold shooting at both ends of the court. The Lady Indians were one point better at 6-5, with the teams heading to the break with Newton holding a slim 20-15 lead.
“Bradford is tough; they played well,” Coach Landis said. “They execute well, their defense is intense, they do a great job.”

The second half belonged to the Lady Indians as they rolled to double-digit scoring in both the third and fourth periods, while Bradford was held to single digits, putting six points on the board in both second-half quarters, giving the visiting Lady Indians a 48-27 WOAC win.
“The girls did a great job today,” said Coach Landis. “They limited it to one shot and out on the defensive end and offensively we kind of had our way inside, we just couldn’t make our shots, similar story as our last game.”

“We have to figure out ways to finish ballgames,” said Coach Siedling. “We can hang with teams; we know we can hang with teams, but we have to figure out how to finish all four quarters.”
Newton got balanced scoring with eight Lady Indians making it into the scoring column, led by nine Rylee Hess points and three players contributing eight points.

“Felicity Harbour did a great job inside getting the ball and making her moves,” Landis said. “Mia Szakal came in and provided that length and that spark we needed with her passing and deflections. Rylee (Hess) and Brilie (Hines), our two-guard combo, do a great job. They feed off each other defensively. Brynnasen Fiely is our freshman coming in off the bench, and she came out and played great defensively. She did exactly what we needed her to do against Canan. I thought she did well and was able to step up for us.”
Lilly Canan led Bradford and all scorers with a game-high 11 points.
“Overall, I am very proud of them,” Coach Siedling stated. “For the most part we played very hard and we executed when we needed to execute, we just have to finish that game.”
