UNION CITY – The Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks hosted the Blackhawk Volleyball Invitational, with the Brookville Lady Blue Devils narrowly winning the Saturday event 2-1 over the Lady Hawks.
“I like this tournament,” said Mississinawa Valley coach Nancy Whitted. “It gives us a chance to have a little bit of fun and not have so much pressure.”
“We are glad to get Brookville involved, get us some more competition,” Whitted added. “I just wish we could have stayed with them and beat them, but they have an excellent team.”
The MV Lady Hawks took second place in a battle with the Brookville dropping the opening set 21-25, earning a second set overtime nail-biter 30-28 before falling in third and deciding set 12-25. The Lady Hawks defeated Ansonia 25-16 and 25-20 and won over neighboring Union City 25-10 and 25-11.
The Ansonia Lady Tiger placed third downing the Union City Lady Indians in straight sets 25-16 and 25-18 with the young Union City team rounding out the tournament in fourth place.
“We have six pretty strong sophomores on the junior varsity,” Coach Whitted said of the Lady Hawks volleyball program. “We have eight seventh and nine eighth graders so it is very promising.”
