Fall, or autumn, whatever you call it, is upon us. Where did the summer go?
Don’t get me wrong, of the four seasons, it is not the lowest one on my list. I have to admit summer is my favorite.
Yes, I do love some of its presentations….the colorful leaves on the trees, the Halloween decorations and watching the children in parades and seeing where others observe this season, via hayrides and such, but this season means we’re getting closer to much colder weather and I could do without some of it, especially when it’s harsh.
And, Christmas decorations will be popping up soon. I appreciate those people who do that as well. As for me, I decorate my house on the inside when the spirit hits me on both of those occasions.
Yes, I have always loved warm but not overly hot weather, so the fall weather is a great break in temperatures, so why can’t we just skip winter?
When I worked full time for all those years, those days were not always kind. I drove in all kinds of weather…ice, heavy snow and white-outs, the latter which I would describe as blizzard-like conditions.
Now that I am working from home part-time, I can delay or cancel a project if I have to and not feel so guilty for the sake of myself and other drivers out there on the roadways.
No, I don’t plan to travel in it and I hope people understand if I tell them that. Besides, I value my hip, knees, back and other parts of my body should I happen to fall down.
It is my plan, though, to stock up my shelves with enough food to get us by if we are snowed in for days at a time.
Kudos to the road crews who go out and make sure the roads and streets are safe during inclement weather for those who have to travel.
And, don’t forget the time change is approaching….next Sunday, I believe. And, the darkness is back for a while.
So, for those who travel, I ask that you drive carefully and stay safe this wintry season.

Son Jamie enjoyed all of his birthday wishes he received on Facebook and in the mail. It amazes me how many people responded. I know I announced it early only because I needed a lead for my column a week or so before his actual birth date, Oct. 19. I will try not to do that again because of all the responses, but I know Jamie didn’t mind at all. He has a following I can’t describe, but he and I are appreciative. You made this young man happy.
He received his annual phone call from Spittin’ Image, who always seems to take time out of their busy day, to call Jamie (as well as me) on our birthdays. And, I’m sure they do that with a lot of other people.
Another thing that happened on his big day, was when Rick Elliott of WGTR radio fame locally, told the listening audience about it being Jamie’s birthday and then played Jamie’s favorite song, “Angels Among Us,” on the air.
Jamie, who loves his friends and enjoys hearing from them the most, came out of his bedroom after that song played on the radio, and said, “Mom, you can’t put a price on that.”
It was emotional for the both of us, and though I was shocked he said that, it doesn’t surprise me, because that’s the way Jamie rolls.
I thank Brian and Blain Swabb as well as Rick Elliott for helping make his day much brighter.
