Happy Labor Day!
Whatever could I write about to commemorate this day?
I know. It’s something that I can do best….recycle.
I’ve been doing it for quite a few years now and feel I am contributing to the environment.
Thank goodness Ansonia has Rumpke Dumpsters in town for us who like to make the environment a better place to live.
Yes, I started recycling quite a number of years ago. Jamie and I lived in a mobile home which at the time had one little pantry in which to hold our “treasures,” which included, at the time, aluminum, glass and cans.
Since then, I have been known to gather up all of the paper, newspapers, magazines and cardboard we go through and take them to the local bins as well.
For several years, I’ve been attending the paper shred events at the Darke County Fairgrounds so that we can get rid of old paper-ish items that have personal information on them which we don’t want anybody else to get ahold of.
I have also taken things that we no longer wear or use to various places including consignment shops. Just this past weekend, I donated some of the shirts and belts that Jamie no longer wears and took them to a place for a veterans organization. My, did that feel good doing something for veterans who have done so much for this country.
I also save all of our bottle caps and take them to the Darke County Solid Waste District office, where I recently found out that they also accept aerosol cans.
I have been known to donate gallon plastic jugs to the local park district, and a neighbor lady is currently getting our used egg cartons.
There are signs up at the Dumpster area in town that let people know what is recyclable and what is not. I hope people abide by those rules so we don’t lose this recycling service.
Besides, I feel really good after doing my part in making this a better place to live.
It was Krista Fourman (now Unger) who got me interested in recycling when she presented one of her programs at a farming event for youth in the Youth Building at the Darke County Fairgrounds quite a few years back.
It opened my eyes to what could happen to our earth and communities if we didn’t do this sort of thing.
I plan on doing it for as long as I can.
