Life’s Reflections: Facing a new year, hoping for the best

620
Here is what I came up with to bring in the new year. Instead of using a pressure cooker like my sister, Bev, does, I chose to do it in the crockpot. All it took was sauerkraut, ribs and potatoes. Not bad if I do say so myself. It's about gone. (Linda Moody photo)

Well, it has finally arrived…the new year 2023.

Like so many years before, I decided to stay home again for New Year’s Eve. Early on in the day, I fixed two crockpots of sausage, ribs and potatoes and a double batch of Scotcheroos.

I hear that sausage and pork are signs of good luck when eaten the first day into the new year, and I need all the help I can get.

The older I get, though, the more sauerkraut doesn’t agree with me. But, two years ago when I went out to the Legion, I loved it and it was great.

I thought, “Why not make it here this year?” So, I did, using a bag of sauerkraut, of course, some ribs (which I used for the first time in this recipe) and potatoes. My sister, Bev, used to make the best New Year’s Eve concoction using the kraut, pork and potatoes, then she fixed them in a pressure cooker. Tasted wonderful.

To me, that’s brave. I’m afraid to even touch a pressure cooker for fear that I wouldn’t use it wisely, and it would explode. I have heard of that happening.

I also took heed and opened my house door at midnight, leaving 2022 out and bringing in 2023. It was a quick fix, because it was a little chilly and I didn’t want a neighborhood cat coming in, so I closed it after a brief time.

Hope that works so the future begins to look a lot brighter for all of us.
Jamie was out at the American Legion celebrating and he, as usual, had fun.

I didn’t mind staying home. I got some work done in his absence, and I also had some me-time, where I could reflect on the past and think a lot about the future.
