GREENVILLE—The Lady Wave won its 2024 regular season home opener by defeating the visiting Troy Lady Trojans volleyball team 3-0 in MVL action by scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-15.

“They played phenomenal today,” said veteran Greenville coach Michelle Hardesty. “We came off a disappointing week last week, again adversity with some injuries and some illness, but we got both injuries back on the floor, and they’re looking strong, so I am very proud of what they did tonight.”

In the night, Troy defeated the Lady Wave in 17 straight matches before Greenville turned the tables, beating a good Lady Trojans volleyball program in three consecutive matches with the Monday night win.

“What a turnaround,” Hardesty noted. “We have been growing this program for seven or eight years, and these girls are showing up, and their skill levels just keep getting better.”

The Lady Wave jumped out to a 12-6 first-set score. The teams played even to close out the opening set, with Greenville posting a 25-19 win.

Set No. 2 had the Lady Wave taking an early 7-2 advantage and a 12-6 lead before the Lady Trojans would knot the score at 17-17. The Greenville girls used an 8-3 run to close out the second set with a 25-20 win.

“They just keep learning, self-correct, do what they’re asked to do, and are coachable,” Coach Hardesty stated. “In each set, they kept getting better and better.”

The Lady Wave saved its best play of the night in the third and final set, opening on a 5-0 run with Troy playing even at 10-10. The Lady Wave then closed out the night on a 10-5 run to take the final set by a double-digit 25-15 score and earn the league win.

“I’ve been talking all preseason about how much potential this team has, so once we get outside these injuries and get good and healed, they’re going to be fun to watch all season,” said Hardesty.
