GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave opened 2024 regular season softball play with an impressive 8-1 MVL win over the visiting Fairborn Lady Skyhawks.
“Great day for Lady Wave Softball, love it, great day opener,” said Greenville coach, Jerrod Newland. “Just happy to come out here to the stadium, get it open, get a win – a big win.”

The teams split in the 2023 MVL season with Greenville winning the Miami Division and the MVL outright with a 17-1 record while Fairborn was winning the Valley Division and finishing second behind the Lady Wave with a 16-2 conference mark.
“Two league champs in the last couple of years squaring off and it’s good to get a win here today,” Newland stated. “Wednesday down there will be totally different story.”

The teams played to a 0-0 score after one inning with Greenville’s Zoe Burns setting the Lady Skyhawks down in order striking out the side swinging.
Addie Burke opened the second with a double to right followed with an Ella McLear run-scoring double to center giving the Lady Wave a 1-0 lead. A Fairborn error moved McLear to third where the LWSB senior would slide safely home on a passed ball giving Greenville a 2-0 advantage lead with two innings in the book.

The Lady Wave plated five third-inning runs taking advantage of a Lady Skyhawks error, a Burns single, a Burke walk, and a 3-run double off the bat of McLear. Haleigh McDermitt legged out an infield single to short advancing McLear to third. McDermitt quickly stole second setting up a 2-run Marissa Hicks single to center giving LWSB a 7-0 lead after three complete.
Kylar Arnett drilled a 2-out fourth-inning double to center and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Burns giving the Lady Wave an 8-0 lead.

Fairborn scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh giving Greenville an 8-1 conference win to open the new season.
Burns went the distance on to pick up the win for the Lady Wave allowing no earned runs over seven innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 walk while striking out 10 Lady Skyhawks.

“Our kids hit the ball well, played some defense,” said Coach Newland. “Zo (Zoey Burns) did a nice job and made some neat plays. Bottom line the sun’s out the music’s playing and Lady Wave Softball is open.”

McLear paced the Lady Wave going 3-3 with 2 doubles and a single, 4 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Burke went 2-2 with a walk and 2 runs scored; Burns 2-4 with an RBI; Hicks 1-3 and 2RBIs, McDermott 1-3 with an RBI; Arnett 1-4 and 2 runs and Savannah Leach a walk. Lily Brubaker and McDermitt each had a stolen base.
