GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave varsity volleyball team won its sixth consecutive match, defeating the visiting Fairborn Lady Skyhawks 3-1 in MVL action.
“Tonight’s game was a pretty good effort,” said Greenville assistant coach Jim Hardesty. “Tonight was the first night we have had our starting lineup that we are going to use for the year.”
Greenville jumped out to a 14-7 first-set advantage before falling to the visitors 28-30 in overtime to trail 1-0.
“The first set, we went out to a nice lead, and they got a little bit complacent,” Hardesty noted. “Fairborn got on a little bit of a run.”
Set No. 2 saw the Lady Wave right the ship and play up to their potential, grabbing a second set 23=11 lead on their way to a 25-13 second set win and even the score at one game apiece.
Greenville quickly doubled up on the Lady Skyhawks 16-8 in the third set of the night, bringing a timeout from the Fairborn bench. The Lady Wave moved out to a double-digit 20-10 lead on their way to a 25-12 third-set win and a 2-1 lead.
The pesky Lady Skyhawks hung around in set No. 4, knotting the score at 11-11 before the Greenville ladies closed out the night on a 14-7 scoring run to win 25-18 and take the conference match 3-1.
“Fairborn played pretty well the first set and then the second, third and fourth sets we kind of dominated as far as putting our will out there and getting swings on the bal,” Hardesty said.l “We had discussed making better swings and taking care of what we can take care of, and they did a great job.”
“I try to get some inspiration out of our comeback and fire myself up, which hopefully will lead to some kills,” said Lady Wave senior Brooke Schmidt. “It’s all about our energy and chemistry on the court. When we get low, everybody hangs their head, and it’s hard to get back up, but when it comes to energy, everybody gets so happy and pumped after every point, and it really helps.”
Schmidt led the Lady Wave with 25 kills, just three short of a school record, and Shyanne Gibboney led Greenville with 26 digs.
Schmidt talked about the pressure of being a senior team leader for the Lady Wave.
“After all of my kills or block, or somebody else’s kill or block or a good pass, after a good termination, it’s an excellent energy builder,” she stated. “I think it comes back to how you get pumped after that point.”
With the win, Greenville improves to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in Miami Valley League play.
