GREENVILLE – The Greenville Lady Wave Softball team was leading 9-0 in the top of the fourth inning over the Oakwood Lady Lumberjacks in the fourth of second round OHSAA DII tournament play when the game was put on hold with heavy rains moving through the area and the officials suspending play for the night.
“Just a great day, getting it in, nothing on the radar for a long time,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “We tried our best and we did what we needed to do. Oakwood was here starting before five, great day for us and Mother Nature just – we tried as hard as we could, did everything we could. GGSA (Greenville Girls Softball Association) has great fields.”
The game will resume today, Friday, May 10, with a 5 p.m. start time at Greenville’s Stebbins Field, home of the Lady Wave Softball program.
“Coach Shaffer got everything ready out here, and Steve and Greg were out here all day getting it,” Newland added. “We came very close, and that last bat kind of got there, but we’re in the top of the fourth, 9-0 Greenville, and we’ll same bat time, same channel tomorrow (Friday), and we’re resume where we’re at.”
“I like where we’re at, making plays, hitting the ball a little bit,” Coach Newland said. A little adversity is good; we’ll roll up our sleeves, dry the shoes out, and try again tomorrow – nine nothing top of four.”
Barring the biggest upset in Lady Wave Softball history, with a win tonight the Lady Wave varsity softball program will win an unprecedented 20 consecutive seasons of 25 plus wins, an incredible accomplishment when only 27 regular season games can be played in a season, and taking into consideration Coach Newland’s non-league schedule has some of the state’s best teams included each year.
In the 20-year, 25-plus win seasons, it is nearly unbelievable that there has not been even one bad class somewhere, some bad breaks or hops, or a young team along the way to break the string.
As Coach Newland always states, “We just play for the name on the front,” and it seems to be working.
With the tournament game at home tonight, everyone has an opportunity to see LWSB history being made beginning at 5 p.m. at Lady Wave Stadium. Come out and support Lady Wave Softball.
