GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave dropped a 53-32 MVL varsity basketball game to the visiting Tippecanoe Lady Red Devils with the win coming in quarters two and three.

“Tipp City is a nice solid basketball team, but when you shoot 15 percent and 48 percent from the free throw line, you’re not doing yourself any favors,” said Greenville coach Rachael Kerns. “We didn’t play a bad first half. We missed a lot of shots, a lot of free throws, but defensively, we did a lot of good things.”

The Lady Devils took the opening period 6-5 before pouring in 17 second-quarter points, including a perfect 8-8 at the free-throw line. They held Greenville to six points, sending the teams to the break with Tipp up 23-11.

Quarter No. 3 was no kinder to the Lady Wave. The Lady Red Devils added 19 points to the board, including another perfect period at the line: 5-for-5. Greenville continued to struggle on the offensive end, with floor leader Avery Baumann going to the bench with an injury; the Lady Wave scored eight points for a 42-19 score with one quarter to play.

“We have to become better ball handlers, and that is on us,” Kerns stated. “That third quarter was the stinger today. When Avery got hurt the first of that third quarter, the wheels just fell off.”

“We took about three steps back that third quarter, so the next-man mentality comes up,” Kerns continued. “We have to be better when somebody goes out. Fortunately for us, she was able to come back in and got us going again. We can’t have moments like we did in the third quarter.”

Greenville turned the corner in the fourth, taking the final eight minutes by a 13-11 score.

Tipp shot 80 percent from the charity stripe, going 16-20, while Greenville finished 48 percent, going 15-32.
