TIPP CITY – The Lady Wave defeated the Tippecanoe Lady Red Devils 15-4 in Tuesday night MVL action on the Lady Devils’ home field.

“Great day to get a road league win,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “Always nice to beat the weather and get one in today.”

Greenville power-hitting third baseman Mahalay Cook continued her early season assault at the plate crushing 2 home runs, a double, and a walk in leading the Lady Wave to the win over Tipp.

Cook hit two more home runs,” Newland said. “A few kids struck the ball very well on the day.”

Greenville took a first-inning 1-0 lead of the night with a deep drive over the leftfield fence off the bat of Cook and exploded for 7 third-inning runs for an 8-0 advantage in the top of the third. Big hits in the inning included RBI doubles off the bats of Zoey Burns, Cook, and Kendall Cromwell, run-scoring singles from Liz Shaffer and Haleigh McDermitt, and Burns getting hit by a pitch to pick up her second RBI of the inning.

Tipp rebounded with 4 runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Lady Wave lead to 8-4 in what would be the Lady Red Devils’ only runs of the night.

A fourth-inning McDermitt RBI single made it a 9-4 score and Cook’s second solo home run to left in the top of the fifth gave the Lady Wave a 10-4 lead.

With her second home run of the day, Cook leads the MVL with 8 home runs far outdistancing No. 2 leader with 3 home runs and is tied for conference RBIs at 23 on the season.

Greenville junior second baseman Kylar Arnett sent 2 sixth-inning runners home with a single to lead 12-4 after six complete. The Lady Wave closed out scoring on the night with an Ella McLear double, a Tipp 2-run error, and a Shaffer ground-out scoring Cromwell for a double-digit 15-4 win.

“Six goose eggs shutout innings,” Coach Newland noted.

Burns pitched the first 5 innings allowing 3 earned runs, 8 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Shaffer tossed the final 2 innings of no-hit shutout ball to keep her ERA on the season at .00 to lead the MVL in pitching.

“Excited for the kids and the opportunities ahead over the next couple weeks,” Newland stated.

Greenville Lady Wave is home tonight, April 10 vs Tippecanoe with a 5 p.m. start time, travels to Xenia this Friday, April 12 for an MVL matchup, and is home Saturday with a noon game with Bradford and a 1:30 p.m. contest with Milton-Union, both non-conference matchups.
