How to Unsend Mistake Emails

We’ve all been there—hitting “Send” on an email too quickly, only to realize there’s a typo, a missing attachment, or that it was sent to the wrong person. Fortunately, some email platforms offer a way to unsend or recall emails, but how it works depends on the service you use. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Gmail (Undo Send Feature)

Gmail doesn’t truly “unsend” an email that’s already delivered—it delays sending for a few seconds so you can cancel.

How to enable and use:

  1. Go to Settings (gear icon) > See all settings

  2. In the General tab, find Undo Send

  3. Set the cancellation period (5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds)

  4. Click Save Changes

After sending an email, you’ll see an “Undo” button at the bottom left. Click it before the time runs out.

2. Outlook (Email Recall Feature – for Microsoft Exchange only)

Outlook allows message recall, but only if:

  • You and the recipient are using Microsoft Exchange

  • The message hasn’t been read

To recall an email:

  1. Go to Sent Items

  2. Open the email you want to recall

  3. Click File > Info > Message Resend and Recall

  4. Choose Recall This Message

  5. Select Delete unread copies or replace with a new message

You’ll get a notification if the recall was successful.

3. Apple Mail (macOS Ventura and later)

Apple Mail includes an Undo Send feature.

How to use:

  • After sending an email, look for the Undo Send button in the lower-left corner of the Mail app window.

  • You have 10 seconds to click it.

4. Yahoo Mail and Others

Many platforms (like Yahoo, AOL, older versions of Outlook, etc.) do not support email unsending once the message has been sent.

Tips to Avoid Mistakes in the First Place

  • Enable delays: Set up a default delay or “Undo Send” buffer if your platform allows.

  • Double-check recipients, subject lines, and attachments.

  • Use drafts: Don’t rush—save your email as a draft and revisit before sending.

  • Proofread before clicking send.

Final Note:

If you’re unable to unsend an email, the next best step is to follow up quickly with a corrected message and a short apology if needed. Most people appreciate the transparency and quick correction.
