SPRINGBORO — Greenville freshman Piper Jenkinson finished tied for eighth at the OHSAA Division I girls Southwest District golf tournament Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Heatherwoode Golf Club, one stroke short of a playoff for the final individual state berth.

Jenkinson shot a 78. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the state tournament.

Her driver broke on the fourth hole, forcing her to use a 3-wood off the tee for the remainder of the round. She shot 43 on the front nine before rallying with three birdies on the back nine to finish even par at 35.

“It was a tough break that she missed the playoff by 1 stroke, but I am really proud of how she came back after her driver broke,” said longtime Greenville girls varsity golf coach Tracy Haines. “She did not give up and kept fighting and playing good golf.”

Jenkinson concluded her freshman season as the Miami Valley League individual champion, averaging 38.0 over 252 holes. The league’s second-place finisher averaged 46.9 over 153 holes.

She helped lead the Lady Wave to an MVL title, finished first in the league tournament, and was the Division I sectional runner-up.
