SPRINGFIELD — The Greenville boys varsity golf team shot a 313 at Locust Hills Golf Club to win the Miami Valley League tournament and share the league championship with Troy and Butler.
The Green Wave’s tournament victory, combined with Troy’s second-place finish and Butler’s third-place showing, left the three teams tied in the final league points standings.
“This is the first time since 2004 we have won the league,” Greenville coach Brian Stickel said. “I am very happy for these boys. Once again I told them we were the underdogs, just go out and play.”
Hayden Null led Greenville with a 77, the tournament’s third-best score. Brody Weaver followed with a 78, while Braxton Moore and Hayden Burns each shot a 79 to complete the Green Wave’s team total. Freshman Harper Kerns finished with an 80, and Braylon Byers carded a 99.
“Once again we played really well,” Stickel said. “Hayden Null and Brody Weaver played steady golf once again. Braxton Moore really grinded today. He really showed some heart out there.”
Burns delivered a pivotal finish, making an eagle on his final hole to help Greenville capture the tournament title.
“Hayden wasn’t happy with his play at sectionals but stepped up today,” Stickel said.
Kerns also finished strong, playing the back nine at even par to post his 80. Stickel said Byers played well despite a couple of difficult holes.
The league championship gives Greenville another accomplishment as the Green Wave prepare for next week’s district tournament.
“They have put in a lot of work to get where they are,” Stickel said. “They really look forward to playing next week in the districts.”
