GREENVILLE – The Greenville Lady Wave is an outstanding volleyball team when they put it all together. Tuesday night was a case in point as the Greenville varsity team defeated the Xenia Lady Buccaneers 3-0 in straight sets in MVL action.
“I feel like everyone connected,” said GHS junior Kindyl Peltz. “Good team effort tonight.”
“We focused more, we didn’t make nearly as many hitting mistakes,” said Greenville assistant coach Jim Hardesty. “Our passing was good again tonight; our hitting was a lot better tonight than it was against Troy, where we had too many errors.”
Timeouts were not in the cards for the Lady Buccaneers, as the Lady Wave jumped out to a 14-8 lead, bringing a timeout from the Xenia bench and timeout trailing 18-9. Greenville raced out to a 1-0 lead, taking the opening set by a double-digit 25-10 win.
“We played well that first set,” Hardesty noted. “We have to keep being positive with what we are doing.”
After leading early in set two, the Lady Wave found themselves trailing 15-16, bringing a Lady Wave timeout to go on and outscore the visiting Lady Buccaneers 10-4, including a Xenia timeout, trailing 21-18 in earning a second set win, going away 25-20 to lead two sets to none.
“We get out to nice leads, and then we seem to give it away point after point,” said Hardesty. “We did that a little bit in the second set, but we finished.”
Xenia used several timeouts in set No. 3, but the Lady Wave took the final set 25-19 to win the conference on Junior High night at Greenville.
Brooke Schmidt led Greenville with 15 kills, Kindyl Pelts led the Lady Wave with 20 assists, and Shyanne Gibboney paced the Lady Wave with 17 assists and 11 digs on the night.
“Kindyl (Peltz) has been setting for us now since she’s been here doing a great job,” Hardesty stated. “She is closing in on the assist record. She probably would have it already if we just let her set all the way around this year. Very proud of her. She has done a great job with all our hitters.”
Greenville has five conference matches remaining as the 2024 season winds down before tournament play begins.
“If we have the same energy and determination as we did tonight, I think we will do great,” Peltz said of the upcoming OHSAA volleyball tournament.
“We are going to go as far as our passing and our hitting will take us,” Coach Hardesty added. “We have a veteran team; now we just have to learn how to finish on some of these matches.”
The Lady Wave improved to 8-5 in conference play and 9-8 overall.
