GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave defeated the Fairborn Lady Skyhawks in short order in a 15-0 MVL run-rule win at Lady Wave Stadium.
“Great day for lady wave softball,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “Just excited for the kids; we’re getting better every day.”
Greenville freshman Ella Oswalt struck out the side in the top of the first inning, setting the tone for the night.
The Lady Wave plated four runs in the top of the first inning with Oswalt knocking in the first run of the game with an RBI single to left, a Kendall Cromwell single, a Lizzie Shaffer RBI groundout to third, and a two run single off the bat of freshman Leah Force giving Greenville a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Hawks went down in order in the top of the second, two by strikeouts, while the Lady Wave added a run in the bottom of the inning with a Zoey Burns double to left and an Oswalt RBI line drive single to center.
Oswalt struck out Fairborn in order in the top of the third, bringing the Lady Wave to the plate to tack on two runs. Force knocked a one-out single to left, Lily Brubaker legged out an infield single, and senior Kylar Arnett knocked a 2-run single to center, sending the teams to the fourth with Greenville leading 7-0.
Fairborn got their lone hit of the game, an infield single to third, before Oswalt set the Lady Skyhawks down in order, including two strikeouts to close out the top of the fourth.
The Lady Wave put the game away with an eight-run fourth inning beginning with an Oswalt single to center, an error, a Shaffer two-run double to center, a Force run-scoring double, and a Brubaker single with no outs recorded.
Coach Newland used the “baserunner leaving the base too soon” strategy to keep the game respectable while not padding the team’s stats.
Rylie Pfledderer hit a two-run double to right, Burns singled to center, and Oswalt reached on an error, scoring two runs and a 14-0 score. A Shaffer RBI single to right made it a 15-0 game, with the Lady Skyhawks coming to the plate in the top of the fifth.
Oswalt closed out the night for the Lady Wave with two strikeouts in the fifth inning, contributing to the Lady Wave’s impressive 15-0 conference win.
Oswalt earned the win in five innings, allowing no runs, one hit, and no walks while striking out 12 batters.
“Ella Oswalt threw well,” Newland said. “We’re hitting the ball better.”
