GREENVILLE – The Green Wave hosted its annual Greenville Invitational at Turtle Creek with 11 teams taking to the Greenville golf course.
Tippecanoe nudged out Butler by two strokes, 311-313 with Russia taking third with a 330 score.
Greenville enters the 2024 season fielding a young team after five seniors from a good 2023 team graduated.
“The varsity squad—I had one freshman and one sophomore playing and senior Josh Baker, who hadn’t come out until this past year—so that was their first varsity match,” said veteran Greenville boys’ golf coach Brian Stickel. Hayden Null, my freshman, shot a 93, so his score counted. I was happy with the way he played. I know he wasn’t happy with the way he played, but I was somewhat pleased with his play.”
“Cole Oswalt played really well, he had an 86,” Stickel continued. “Drew and Carson weren’t happy with their play, but I know they will come back and fight. They’re going to work at it to get better.”
The Greenville White team gave Coach Stickle a look at the future of GHS boys golf.
“The white team, the second group, I had two freshmen playing. One of them shot an 89, which I was really happy with, and the other youngster shot a 103,” said Stickle. It was their first time playing in any type of match. I was very pleased with that.”
The Thursday competition was the opening match of the season for the Green Wave, a season Coach Stickle expects to see improvement from his team.
“I have a lot of young kids playing this year,” Stickle noted. It will be an interesting year; we’ll see what happens. Some days, you just have bad days. They’re going to be all right, and we’re going to be okay.”
“It’s a very long season. We’re looking forward to it,” Stickle concluded.
