Former softball coach now in federal custody

DARKE COUNTY – Matthew A. Shoffstall, Jr. (36) of Greenville is now in federal custody for allegedly threatening players, during his role as a softball coach, to send him nude pictures of themselves.

Shoffstall was indicted on May 28 by a federal grand jury on several felony counts, including Receiving Child Pornography, Distribution of Child Pornography, Possession of Child Pornography, Interstate Threats (extortion) and Attempted Tampering with Evidence. The offenses are said to have occurred from March 6, 2024, through April 5, 2024.

He was originally indicted by a Darke County grand jury on 10 felony counts on April 15, 2024. The prosecution was terminated and handed over to federal prosecutors.

According to Darke County Assistant Prosecutor, Deborah S. Quigley, during the course of the investigation, there was just so much evidence that the case needed to be handled at a federal level.

Shoffstall reportedly tried to delete the evidence prior to his arrest.
