GREENVILLE – Darke County Veterans and spouses returned early Monday morning from the Darke County Veterans Services (DCVS) annual four-day Washington, D.C. trip.
“We want to thank everyone in the county who supported the trip to Washington, DC this year, and all the businesses who donated to allow the Veterans to go to DC and see the monuments erected in their honor,” said DCVS Director/CVSO Veterans Service Officer, Tom Pitman.
Monuments and sights the group spent time viewing included: Arlington National Cemetery (Arlington, VA); Air Force Memorial (Arlington, VA); US Marine Corps War Memorial (Arlington, VA), Museum of the United States Marine Corps (Triangle, VA): National Museum of the United States Army (Fort Belvoir, VA); and the WWII Memorial, Korean Memorial, and the Vietnam Wall Memorial located in Washington DC.
Also included in the four-day trip were visits to the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial (Flight 77) (Arlington, VA), the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument, with many taking the 500-foot elevator ride to the top of the monument for a panoramic view of our Nation’s Capital, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
On the return trip home, the group visited the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum in Gettysburg, PA, and the Flight 93 National Memorial located in Stoystown, PA.
The group enjoyed meals at many popular eateries, including Devil Dog Diner (Washington, PA), Ledo Pizza, Five Guys, Hard Rock Café, and Oakhurst Grille & Event Center, located in Somerset, PA.
Tom Pitman, DCVS Director/CVSO Veterans Service Officer, Var Gehron, Veterans Service Officer; Cindy Bruner, Administrative Assistant, and DCVS Commissioners Scott Riffle and Gaylen Blosser hosted the four-day DC trip.
“As always, it was a great trip,” Pitman stated. “We had a great group of people and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the trip.”
The five branches of the United States services —Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard — were represented by the Darke County Veterans.
