DARKE COUNTY – The Darke County Senior Center has held many fun activities. Recently, garden enthusiasts were invited to bring their divided perennials, bulbs, and plants to trade with others. The event was a great success. Everyone brought a wonderful variety of plants to share, such as hostas, yucca, Rose of Sharon, bearded iris, and ground covers, like creeping phlox.
Houseplants were included in the mix, such as spider plants and aloe. Everyone had the opportunity to take home at least two plants. It was a wonderful way to share plants, gardening ideas, and fellowship. Those who could not attend can always look forward to next year when the event will be repeated.
The bread making of sourdough and friendship bread was another successful program at the center. Thirty-five men and women attended as presenters Gloria Saintignon and Kathy Hamilton mixed and prepared sourdough bread. The two shared many helpful tips and suggestions while answering questions thoroughly to ensure everyone’s future bread-making endeavors were successful.
Before the class began, the two ladies had cleverly prepared three loaves in the oven. The aroma of fresh bread filled the center during their demonstration and upon their conclusion all in attendance were able to enjoy freshly baked bread! Everyone was given a sourdough starter, a necessity to continue their bread making at home.
Mary Rodeheffer then introduced the group to her friendship bread recipe. All watched as she prepared the ingredients, followed by a Q&A. Each person received loaf of friendship bread along with starter and directions on how to feed the starter. Everyone seemed well pleased with the program, as they carried their starts in their hands, bread in their tummies and smiles on their faces.
Have you been following us on Facebook? If so, then you already know our Facebook page has disappeared. We are in communication with Meta Support working together to reactivate our account. We’ve been told this happens often and we remain hopeful that it will be restored soon, however, it may take another 2 – 3 weeks before we are able to post again.
Although this Facebook situation is a major inconvenience, it has never been our only means of communication. We are grateful to the local newspapers, radio stations, as well as businesses and their willingness to post our monthly flyer and calendar. You can see these flyers at almost every doctor’s office, library, and many businesses, such as pharmacies and grocery stores. The public is ever encouraged to pick up a copy at the Darke County Senior Center during our hours of operation.
