DARKE COUNTY – On July 14, the Darke County Holstein 4-H club held their July meeting at the Bradford Community Center. The meeting was called to order and we were reminded to wear sunscreen. Thank you to everyone who sold tickets at Rural King on Saturday, July 12. Our club had 2 campers and 3 counselors go to 4-H camp. They explained how fun it was and their favorite part.
Make up Skillathon is Saturday, July 19, from 9 to 11 for Dairy. Beef Skillathon is Saturday, July 19 from 9 to 11 am. Make up Beef Skillathon is Tuesday, July 29th from 6 to 8 pm. Make up Skillathon for Rabbits is Tuesday, July 15th from 6 to 8 pm.
Essays for not going to Skillathon are due August 1st at the Jr. Fair Office. They will be setting up the show ring after the Dairy make-up Skillathon around noon. They need help and a power washer. Darke County Jr. fair Royalty Pageant is Saturday, July 19th at 7 pm in the Community Building.
On Friday, July 18th, Project Presentation of Awards is at the Birchwood Training Center for Non-Livestock Projects. Make sure your steers and feeder calves have the 840 tags in their ears before coming to the fair. If lost, contact Betsy at the Jr. Fair office. Make sure to send out your sale letters. Sale is on Thursday, August 21st at 5 pm in the Cattle Arena.
Fair tickets will go up $30 on the first of August. If anyone is interested in running for Jr. Fairboard, they are looking for people age 14 and up. They are looking for workers for the cattlemen’s tent. You can sign up at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E044FA4A82AA4FC1-56586333-2025#/.
Everyone needs to get their Jr. Fair Badge ID done. It needs to be done by July 29th. Make sure to sign up for the Jr. Fair Show and Open Class entries. They are due by July 21st. Late fees are $100 after the 21st. Make sure to enter Showmanship as well. Applications for the leadership award are due by the first Friday of the Fair to Karen Stanley.
Our next meeting will be August 11th at 1 pm at the Fairgrounds. We will be putting sawdust down and putting our booth together. We will need skidloaders to help put down sawdust. This year, the Dairy Committee has decided to raffle off a TV and have an Overall Exhibitor award. 1st place will get $1000, 2nd $75,0 3rd $500, 4th $250, 5th $125, 6th $75, 7th $75, 8th $75 and a Rookie of the Year award for any First Year member with the highest score.
To win the TV, you have to participate in things such as the Dairy Clinic, Cleaning Up, Sportsmanship, Ring Workers, Working in the Steak and Chop tent, Passing out Ribbons, Helping with the sale, Setting up the Show Ring, Announcing Shows, and Helping Advisors; to get tickets. To be eligible for the Overall Exhibitor prizes, you must participate in Showmanship, make a consumer education video that is 2-3 minutes long about either How the dairy/ market beef industry has changed in the last 5 years or Talking to a consumer (not a friend or family member) in-depth about their project. Your Skillathon score, Skillathon interview, and Animal class placing will also be totaled in. We then made the lettering for our booth.
The theme is Let’s TACO Bout 4-H. We then ended the meeting.
