DAR to honor Vietnam Veterans

GREENVILLE – Fort GreeneVille Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will be honoring all Darke County Vietnam Veterans on Friday, March 29 at 10:00 am. The Darke County Commissioners and Greenville Mayor will be presenting Vietnam Veterans Day proclamations at the Veterans Memorial Park gazebo next to the Greenville VFW at 219 N Ohio St. Afterwards, donuts and coffee will be provided by Fort GreeneVille Chapter DAR, Eikenberry’s Foodliners, and VFW Post 7262. The public is encouraged to attend.

People often ask, “Why March 29?” Well, the answer is multifaceted. First, March 29, 1973, was the day the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, was disestablished. In addition, March 29, 1973, was the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. Finally, March 29, 1973, was the day Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war. As you can see, March 29 is a fitting choice for our National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

In order to thank and honor our Vietnam veterans and their families, the Vietnam War Commemoration staff of the Department of Defense has enlisted the help of Commemorative Partners, those being local, state, and national organizations, businesses, corporations, governmental agencies, and sports franchises. These partners will conduct events and activities that thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families in their hometowns. Locally, Fort GreeneVille Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution is privileged to be a Vietnam War Commemorative Partner and humbled to honor Vietnam Veterans on March 29. Fort GreeneVille DAR has been a Commemorative Partner since 2014.
