GREENVILLE – The Greenville Municipal Concert Band returns to the Marling Band Shell in the Greenville City Park on Sunday, July 26. Concert time will be 7:00 pm. There is plenty of seating available on park benches, or listeners may bring their own lawn chairs. There is no admission charge for the concert. The band will be under the direction of its associate director, Doug Albright.
This concert, entitled Largely Latin, features a broad spectrum of music that could be classified as Latin music or Spanish-influenced music. The concert leads off with a spirited version of “Trumpets Ole.” Other music scheduled to be performed ranges from “Viva Mexico,” an overture based on Mexican folk tunes, to a medley of music from Encanto. Encanto is a Disney animated movie released in 2021 featuring the music of Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Although almost all the music programmed has some Latin connection, several tunes evoke other times and places. “Sobra Las Olas” (Over The Waves) is a waltz often used for circus aerial acts and carousels. Leroy Anderson’s “Blue Tango” could easily be used for ballroom dancing. “Sol y Sombra” is a Spanish march that sounds as if it could be performed at the bullfights. Even Ricky Martin (“Livin’ La Vida Loca”) and John Philip Sousa (“El Capitan March”) get into the act.
The Greenville Municipal Concert Band invites you to join them for a pleasant Sunday evening of band music in the park. Concerts will continue each Sunday evening through August 16.
