BROOKVILLE – The Arcanum Trojans dropped a 55-46 hard-fought road game to the Brookville Blue Devils in non-conference action.
“We knew coming into it it was going to be like this,” said Arcanum coach, Kevin Brackman. “They have one of the best frontcourts we will probably see this year.”
Arcanum struggled most of the night to get shot to fall including at the free throw line where Brookville was a perfect 12-12 while the Trojans hit 3-8 for 37.5 percent shooting.
“We couldn’t buy a bucket and couldn’t finish around the rim,” Brackman stated. “I just kept waiting for that first one to fall, the first one to fall and the first one to fall.”
Brookville jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with 6:12 showing on the first quarter clock before a breakaway Brady Lock slam dunk put the Trojans on the board. Landon Flatter paced Arcanum with 5 first-period points including a 3-pointer.
The Trojans battled back in second-quarter play to double up on the Blue Devils 14-7 taking a slim 25-24 lead to the halftime break. Five Trojans got in the second quarter scoring column led by Brylen Etherington with 5 points including a trey and two free throws. Lock also hit a triple in the period.
“We closed the second quarter well,” said Coach Brackman. “I felt like going into halftime with the lead, starting fresh but you have to give credit to Brookville. They’re a great team, they’re going to win a lot of ballgames.”
Brookville took the third quarter 12-9 sending the game to the final period of play with the Blue Devils holding a 36-34 lead.
Arcanum battled back in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to lead 41-38 at 6:22 bringing a timeout from the Brookville bench before the game slipped away with the Blue Devils using a 17-5 run to pull out the non-conference win.
“Down the stretch, you have to give them credit, they hit big shots when they were down that allowed them to separate,” Brackman said. “I felt like at 41-38 when we had the lead after a timeout – I felt like after Regan hit his first shot of the game we were going to be able to get over the hump.”
“I have a great team, I’m proud of them,” added Brackman. “It gives us something to work on. They say you don’t ever lose, you either win or you learn from it so it’s kind of where we are.”
Brookville’s Jace Wood led all scorers with a game-high 22 points. Landon Flatter led Arcanum with 15 points.
